As critical minerals experience strong market growth, with the IEA projecting their combined market value to more than double to USD$770 billion by 2040 in their net zero scenario, the mining sector faces crucial challenges in water use and tailings management.
These interconnected issues present significant risks and constraints as the industry strives to meet increasing demand for key energy transition minerals including copper, lithium, nickel, cobalt, graphite, and rare earth elements. The challenges are intensifying as water supply and quality face mounting threats, while lower ore grades lead to substantial increases in tailings volume, prompting escalating societal and environmental concerns worldwide.
In response to these pressing challenges, the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) joined forces with MIT to host a Global Summit on Mine Tailings Innovation, seeking industry collaboration to accelerate the development of solutions to reuse, reduce, and reimagine mine tailings.
The Reimagining Tailings white paper outlines ways to address and transform mine tailings, based on the panel discussions and comments by Satish Rao at the summit.
