On the sidelines of the Energy Future Forum in May, Clareo Chairman Peter Bryant sat down with Maggie Miller to discuss a risk hiding inside the energy transition — a severe minerals famine.
Rare earths dominate the headlines, but Peter argues they’re the manageable part of the problem — low volume, high strategic value, and within America’s reach to fix.
The harder challenge is bulk mineral resources. Demand for copper, lithium and nickel is growing exponentially, rebuilding domestic supply at that scale would take decades, and downstream energy companies are sleepwalking into the gap. The only workable answer is strategic international collaboration with the countries that hold the resources . Right now, the Western approach is fragmented enough that China wins every day.
